Determining Potential Difference with a Pointer-Type Electroscope This pointer-type electroscope is a practical instrument for electrostatic experiments, designed to measure the potential difference between two charged objects. It offers a straightforward way to check whether an object carries a charge, to determine if that charge is negative, to assess the insulating properties of materials, and to carry out tests involving inductive electrification. Measuring Potential Difference To measure the potential difference between two charged bodies, connect the metal casing of the electroscope to one charged object and the metal rod to the other. In most setups, the casing is earthed; with the earth’s electrical potential taken as zero, the potential of each charged body can then be read directly from the electroscope. Checking Charge and Insulation When testing whether an object is charged, you can touch the electroscope’s ball to the object under examination and then transfer the acquired charge to the metal rod, or simply bring the metal rod into direct contact with the object. For checking insulation, the simplest method is to earth the object, for instance by touching it with your hand, and then bring another part of the object into contact with the charged metal rod of the electroscope. Watch the pointer: if it soon returns to zero, the material is a conductor; if it does not, the material is an insulator.
