Next, test the finder by turning it on with the small rotary control on the side. Look through the hole at the front of the finder and you should see the red dot. Use the rotary control to adjust brightness; this control also serves as the on/off switch. Now set up your telescope as normal, but attach the red dot finder instead of the standard optical finder. Point your telescope at a distant object such as a TV aerial or chimney — any distinct object of similar size will work, and greater distance improves accuracy. Using a low power eyepiece (25mm is ideal), locate the object by adjusting the telescope and bring it into focus. Use the slow motion controls on the mount to center the object in the eyepiece view. Adjust the finder so the red dot is precisely aligned with the object. Use the two adjustment wheels: the one on the front right adjusts left/right, and the one on the back bottom adjusts up/down. Turn the finder off and wait until dark to observe. To use, turn the finder on and look through the viewing window, aligning the red dot with your target. When the red dot is centered on the star or planet, the object should appear in the center of your eyepiece view. Remember to turn the finder off after locating your target to conserve battery life.
