Rotary Encoder Module with Push Button for Arduino and Raspberry Pi
Product description
This incremental rotary encoder converts rotational movement into a stream of clean digital pulse signals for precise angle and position control. It operates at 5 V and generates 20 pulses per full revolution. The encoder counts pulses when turned clockwise or counterclockwise, supports an unrestricted counting method, and can be reset to zero using the encoder push button so the output returns to the initial status.
Key benefits
- Accurate pulse output: Generates 20 pulses per revolution to provide repeatable position feedback for control and measurement tasks.
- Bidirectional counting and reset: Counts both positive and negative rotations and can be reset to zero via the built-in push button for easy recalibration.
- Clean, stable signals: Photoelectric detection and on-board signal processing convert low-level light changes into high-level square pulses for reliable digital interfacing.
- Interference-resistant outputs: Two-channel differential sensing with a 180 degrees phase shift improves signal quality and reduces noise for stable operation in electrically noisy environments.
- 5 V compatibility: Designed for direct use with 5 V logic systems and common microcontrollers.
How it works
- Photoelectric scanning principle: An alternating light and dark radial disk is exposed to an infrared light source. The transmitted light forms an image on the receiver, which is covered by a diffraction grating matching the window pattern.
- Optical to electrical conversion: The receiver detects changes in transmitted light as the disk rotates and converts those optical changes into electrical signals.
- Signal conditioning: Low-level signals are amplified and shaped into interference-free rectangular pulses by the required readout circuitry.
- Differential readout: Two signals with identical waveform and a 180 degrees phase difference are compared to derive position information and reject common-mode disturbances.
Technical specifications
- Supply voltage: 5 V
- Pulses per revolution: 20
- Counting: Bidirectional (positive and negative rotation)
- Reset: Returns to zero via encoder push button
- Sensing principle: Incremental photoelectric encoder with differential two-channel output and 180 degrees phase shift
Applications and practical use scenarios
- Motor position feedback: Use as a position sensor for small DC or stepper motors where 5 V signal compatibility and bidirectional counting are required.
- User interface knob: Integrate as a rotary input control for instrumentation, audio equipment, or embedded systems needing tactile position reset and reliable pulse output.
- Motion and automation systems: Employ in robotics, conveyor indexing, or machine controllers to detect rotation, count revolutions, and provide resettable position references.
Compatibility and integration notes
- Designed to interface with 5 V logic inputs and common microcontroller digital counters and interrupt inputs.
- Requires a readout circuit or driver to amplify and shape the optical receiver output into clean logic-level pulses.
- Outputs two phase-shifted channels suitable for direction detection and stable counting routines.
This encoder provides reliable incremental position feedback through photoelectric detection, stable differential outputs, bidirectional counting, and a resettable position reference for a wide range of 5 V control and measurement applications.
