Single-Action Plant Tying Tool

This single-action plant tying tool is 22 cm long and weighs 380 g, combining portability with functional rigour. Its core mechanism relies on a cam-driven gear train that converts linear handle movement into precise tape feed, rotational winding, and final shear — all within one continuous motion. Tape width is fixed at 12 mm, compatible with widely available horticultural binding tapes. The adjustment knob offers tactile feedback across its range, letting users lock in preferred length (3–12 cm) and resistance (low to medium) before starting work. The cutter blade is replaceable and positioned for direct access during cleaning. Designed for repeated engagement with living plant tissue, it avoids sharp edges or abrasive surfaces that could score bark or epidermis. The non-slip grip extends fully around the handle circumference, supporting varied hand sizes and glove thicknesses. Tape chamber clearance allows use with slightly curled or partially unwound rolls — reducing waste from tape end discard. Performance remains stable across ambient temperatures from 5°C to 30°C, matching typical UK outdoor and protected cropping windows. Used extensively in trial plots across Kent, Lincolnshire, and Cornwall, it demonstrates measurable gains in tying throughput (avg. +4.2 plants/minute) and reduction in reported hand strain (78% of surveyed users noted improved comfort after 30 minutes’ use).
